Things I Like About Scottsdale
Here are a few words about our city governmental system, our city services, and finally our city parks all of which contribute to our home values!
Scottsdale uses a charter system of government. The actual governing of the city is defined by the charter rather than by state, provincial or regional or national laws. A charter gives a city’s residents that flexibility to choose any kind of government structure allowed by law. In years past the city of Scottsdale had a system with a strong city manager actually “running” the cities business and a separate city council dealing with the politics of the city. More recently, the city council has been run by a Mayor looking to reduce the role of the city manager and having the duties shared with a treasures position. These type of changes would be voted upon by Scottsdale residents. Scottsdale also has taken a long-term view politically by setting up the Sonoran Preserve area, or by working to create a “Safe Yield” water situation (simply: safe yield is whereby the water taken from the ground is replenished at an equal rate thereby sustaining natural water levels). Scottsdale uses local cable channel 11 to broadcast council meetings. A very helpful view into the inner workings of the city and a great way to stay current on city politics.
Now a word about out city services. Scottsdale has a good call center ((480) 312-3111). A caller is typically efficiently routed to the correct person to handle your issue. If they are not in, you typically receive a call back promptly. They have an equally efficient Web site (www.scottsdaleaz.gov). I’ve been impressed with the level of personal contact you receive when dealing with the city. Need a water usage audit, boom they are there. Need a project permitted, boom the one-stop-shop can do in in short order. Need to talk directly to the folks who control the traffic lights around town, boom your are connected. Need to speak with the chief of police or fire chief, or city manager, boom your are connected. There’s even a swat team for pot holes that travels around on a moments notice to take care of road issues right away. The thinking is that its cost effective to catch it early than to wait for a larger problem to develop. See a pot hole, give them a call. Granted, you may not always get the answer you were looking for, but you will get connected and you will get an answer. Utilize the Web site first. It is a wealth of knowledge. Then call in for more help if needed.
One of the great things about Scottsdale is its Parks and open space. As the city was developed over the years more and more property was acquired and placed in a preserve. The preserves were and are developed with use in mind. Walking, hiking, and biking paths were developed so Scottsdale residents can enjoy our great sunshine. One of the crown jewels is the Pinnacle Peak Preserve (A mixed use path of approx. 4 miles round trip). From highest point on the path you can see across the entire Phoenix valley. This is a favorite spot for photographers. Scottsdale has many trail heads offering residents and visitors alike the opportunity to enjoy the pristine desert environment.

To wrap this up a bit, I feel that Scottsdale is a great place to live, a great place to raise a family, and a great place to visit and enjoy even for a short time. The weather, the parks and facilities, the location to the surrounding valley and to the Grand Canyon and Northern Arizona destinations (I can write a book on that too). bottom line, Long-term, Scottsdale is a great place to be.
